WYE RIVER VISITOR GUIDE

Beaches, village walks,
and days out.

Make WyeSass your base between Lorne and Apollo Bay. Stay close to the village, or head along the Great Ocean Road for rainforest, waterfalls, and a meal.

Our favourite places include Wye General Store, Wye Beach Hotel, Totti’s Lorne, Tacos ’N’ Tequilas, Pit Stop Lorne, Pholklore Lorne, Apollo Bay Hotel, Maits Rest, and Sheoak Falls. Other suggestions below draw on regional visitor information.

Start with the village

Wye River’s village centres on the beach, General Store, and Wye Beach Hotel.

Wye General Store is a convenient stop for breakfast, coffee, lunch, and supplies. We regularly visit, including with Ghost in the outdoor seating area. See the Wye General Store visitor listing for venue information.

Wye Beach Hotel overlooks the beach and serves lunch and dinner. The pub currently operates on a walk-in basis rather than taking table bookings. Quiet, well-behaved dogs are welcome at outdoor tables and must stay on a lead. Check the hotel’s website for menus and current arrangements.

Walking from WyeSass

The beaches, General Store, and hotel are within walking reach for guests comfortable with steep hills. The route includes uphill and downhill sections, with a substantial climb on the return to WyeSass.

We regularly walked to the pub and back with Xander when he was five. Even so, the slopes won’t suit every group. Driving is a sensible option if anyone finds steep walks challenging.

There are also 30 steps from the driveway to the front door. Consider the return journey before setting out with beach equipment, shopping, or tired children.

Wye River and Separation Creek beaches

Wye River Beach is an option for a beach walk, time on the sand, or a swim when conditions suit. Wye River Surf Lifesaving Club patrols during the summer season. Check patrol times and swim between the flags when patrols operate.

For beach and foreshore information, visit the official Wye River page.

Separation Creek offers another nearby stretch of coast to explore. Combine a visit with Paddy’s Path, or make a separate trip.

Separation Creek Beach is unpatrolled throughout the year. Keep this distinction in mind when choosing somewhere to swim, particularly with children. Read the official Separation Creek visitor information.

Paddy’s Path: village to village

Paddy’s Path connects Wye River and Separation Creek through bushland above the Great Ocean Road. The regional tourism guide estimates about 20 minutes one way.

From Wye River, access starts behind the CFA building. At the Separation Creek end, access is from Stanway Drive. Wear walking shoes and allow extra time for uneven surfaces and stops.

This timing covers the village-to-village path, rather than the full journey from WyeSass.

Use the Paddy’s Path guide for route information. Don’t assume a shoreline walk around the headland provides an interchangeable route, since tides and sea conditions affect coastal access.

Sheoak Falls: toward Lorne

Sheoak Falls is one of our favourite nearby outings. The route from the coastal car park below the falls is approximately 1.2 kilometres return. Parks Victoria describes the walk as moderate and estimates around 30 minutes. Allow longer for stops and changing track conditions.

Choose the correct starting point. Sheoak Picnic Area on Allenvale Road is a separate starting point for a wider network of walks, rather than the short coastal-car-park route.

Check the official walks directory before setting out. Dogs are not permitted on the Sheoak Falls walk.

A meal or outing in Lorne

Head toward Lorne for a meal and time around the town. Our favourite places include:

Check each venue’s current opening hours, menu, and booking arrangements before travelling.

For an additional stop, consider Teddy’s Lookout, which overlooks the St George River mouth and the coastal road. This is a researched suggestion rather than somewhere we’ve personally explored. Find details in the official attractions directory.

Apollo Bay and the coast west

Apollo Bay offers another direction for a day out. The Apollo Bay Hotel is among our favourites, with a bistro, front deck, and beer garden. Check the venue’s current menu and booking arrangements.

For a view over the town and coastline, consider Marriners Lookout. Regional visitor information lists approximately one kilometre return and 20 minutes, including a steep uphill section. The track crosses private property, so follow the signs and close gates.

Cape Patton Lookout is another possible stop on the coastal drive between Wye River and Apollo Bay. Choose a designated stopping area and leave time for the winding road.

Maits Rest: a rainforest circuit

Maits Rest is another of our favourite outings beyond Apollo Bay. The circuit passes through cool-temperate rainforest, with boardwalk sections among ferns and large trees.

Published official information lists an approximately 800-metre circuit taking around 30 minutes. Wear shoes with grip and allow time to walk slowly through the forest.

Pair the walk with a stop in Apollo Bay rather than trying to fit several distant attractions into the same day. See the official Maits Rest guide for access information.

Another option: Wildlife Wonders

For visitors interested in a guided wildlife experience, Wildlife Wonders near Apollo Bay offers tours through a conservation sanctuary. Its Walk with Wildlife tour takes approximately 75 minutes. Sanctuary entry requires a booked guided tour.

We haven’t visited, so this is an option to investigate rather than a personal recommendation. Check tour details and availability.

Three ways to plan your day

STAY LOCAL

Village and beaches

Have breakfast in the village, walk Paddy’s Path, spend time at the beach, and return for a meal at Wye Beach Hotel.

TOWARD LORNE

Falls and a meal

Combine the short Sheoak Falls walk with lunch or dinner in Lorne. Add a lookout stop if time and conditions suit.

TOWARD APOLLO BAY

Forest or wildlife

Choose Maits Rest or a booked Wildlife Wonders tour, then stop in Apollo Bay for a meal. Allow time for the coastal drive home.

Before heading out

Check current track access rather than relying on older travel articles. Some regional walking routes remain affected by flood damage and repair works. The official walks directory identifies current closures.

Bring water, walking shoes, sun protection, and a layer for changing weather. Follow beach and track signs, keep clear of cliff edges, and watch for snakes during warmer weather.

If you’re bringing a dog, check each destination’s rules before leaving. Our dog-friendly Wye River stay guide covers local beach arrangements, outdoor dining, and practical details at WyeSass.

Leave some time unplanned

There’s no need to fill every day with driving. A village meal, a beach walk, and an afternoon back at WyeSass make a complete day too.

WyeSass is independently owned, and managed by Saltwater Properties. For great rates, book through Saltwater.
