DOG-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION IN WYE RIVER

Bring your dog
to WyeSass.

Make yourself at home

Dogs are welcome at WyeSass, with no dog restrictions, extra pet fees, or pre-approval requirement. We regularly stay here with Ghost, our Siberian Husky. Our favourite outings include walks around Wye River, beach visits, and food or drinks at the General Store and Wye Beach Hotel.

Dogs are welcome inside. We ask you to keep them off the beds and use the waterproof sofa protector if your dog joins you on the sofa. You’ll find the protector in the second downstairs hallway closet, closest to the front door.

Please bring your dog’s own:

  • Food and water bowls, and their usual food
  • Bedding and dog towels
  • Lead and poo bags

Our approach is simple: look after the house, consider the neighbours, and use your judgement about your dog’s needs. If you head out without your dog, consider how comfortably they settle alone in unfamiliar surroundings and whether barking might disturb nearby homes.

Enclosed balcony and rear terrace

The front balcony and rear terrace are fully enclosed by glass balustrades. The rear terrace has a self-closing glass gate. After passing through, please check the gate has closed and locked securely.

These enclosed spaces are separate from the surrounding garden and grounds. Supervise your dog outside and check the enclosures suit your dog’s size and behaviour.

Toileting and cleaning up

Artificial-grass toileting pads sit at the bottom of the rear terrace stairs, beside the firewood racks. Bring one or two onto the rear terrace if useful for your dog.

You don’t need to clean the pads. Pouring a jug of water over them after use is optional.

Dogs are also welcome to toilet outside the enclosed areas. Please pick up and bag their poo wherever they go.

After sandy or muddy outings, rinse your dog using the outdoor hose at the southeast corner of the house, beside the stairs leading toward the main entrance. Bring your own dog towel for drying off.

Access and walking from the house

WyeSass sits on a steep hillside. There are 30 steps from the driveway to the front door, and an internal spiral staircase connects the two floors.

The outdoor steps have timber frames filled with landscaping stones. The footing is uneven in places, and dogs with sensitive paws might find the surface uncomfortable.

Wye River Beach, Separation Creek Beach, Wye General Store, and Wye Beach Hotel are within walking reach for guests and dogs comfortable with steep hills. Expect uphill and downhill sections, including a substantial climb on the return journey. Driving is an easier option for some groups.

Snakes in warmer weather

Snakes are more active during the warmer months. Keep your dog close and on a lead around bushland, long grass, and dense vegetation. Stick to clear paths and supervise outdoor toileting. Enclosed balconies and terraces are not snake-proof.

If you see a snake, keep your distance and move your dog away calmly. Never approach, handle, or attempt to catch the snake.

If you suspect a snake bite, keep your dog calm and as still as possible. Contact a vet immediately and arrange urgent transport, even if your dog appears well. Do not wait for symptoms.

Beach time with your dog

We often take Ghost to Wye River Beach.

From 24 December to 30 April, dogs are prohibited in the designated main beach area between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. Other sections have different access arrangements, so use the marked dog-permitted areas during those hours. A quieter stretch alone does not establish whether dogs are allowed.

Check the signs at your beach entry point for boundaries, leash requirements, and temporary restrictions. Separation Creek and other Great Ocean Road beaches also have their own controls.

Food and drinks together

Wye General Store welcomes dogs in its outdoor seating area. We regularly take Ghost along when we visit for food or coffee.

Wye Beach Hotel permits quiet, well-behaved dogs at outdoor tables. Dogs must remain on a lead.

For outings to Lorne or Apollo Bay, check with your chosen café or restaurant before arriving with your dog. Outdoor seating does not always mean dogs are permitted.

Before heading out, pack a lead, water, a bowl, and poo bags. Keep your dog close around roads, wildlife, and other visitors.
